NEWS RELEASE: PEV APPOINTS NICOLAS ALBERTO DOSMAN AS MUSIC DIRECTOR

BERKELEY, CALIF (June 17, 2025) – Pacific Edge Voices (PEV), the Berkeley-based vocal ensemble known for its wide-ranging repertoire and artistic collaborations, today announced the appointment of Dr. Nicolás Alberto Dosman as the ensemble’s new music director. Dosman is the organization’s fourth music director, succeeding Ash Walker who departed the group in June 2024.

“After an extensive search that attracted a remarkable array of highly qualified candidates, we are absolutely delighted to welcome Nicolás as PEV’s next music director,” said Jiyoun Chung, the president of PEV’s board. “In addition to his technical expertise as both a conductor and vocal pedagogue, Nicolás brings a deep and broad range of musical experiences to PEV.  We are also excited that his unique artistic vision and deep commitment to exploring the widest possible array of music align perfectly with both PEV’s legacy and vision for our future.”

Dosman serves as associate professor of teaching and director of choirs at UC Davis.  He previously was associate professor of music, choral conducting and director of choral studies at University of Southern Maine, and director of choral activities and music associate in voice at Colby College in Waterville, ME. Dosman holds a doctorate in music education from Columbia University, a master’s degree in choral music education from Florida State University and a bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. A Panamanian American who has spent most of his life on the east coast, Dosman will continue his work at UC Davis while taking on this new role with PEV.

“I am thrilled to be joining this amazing family of talent and community. Pacific Edge Voices has a long tradition of innovative performances that initially drew me to this role,” said Dosman. “I look forward to building on that legacy and to expanding the group’s outreach into the community.”

Pacific Edge Voices began in 1980 as the Pacific Mozart Ensemble. The group’s rich history includes artistic collaborations with talented and inspiring composers and artists such as John Adams, Dave Brubeck, David Lang, Bobby McFerrin, Meredith Monk, Deke Sharon, Sufjan Stevens, Sweet Honey in the Rock, American Bach Soloists, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Coro Nacional de Cuba, Napa Valley Symphony, Oakland East Bay Symphony, and many others. The Berkeley-based ensemble was nominated for a “Best Choral Performance” Grammy® Award in 2006 for the Harmonia Mundi recording of Bernstein’s Mass with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin under the direction of Kent Nagano. PEV has made four international tours and debuted at Carnegie Hall in November 2005, representing choral music for Meredith Monk’s 40th Anniversary Celebration. In 2024, Pacific Edge Voices was a national finalist for The American Prize in choral performance (community division).
